5 Toxic Ingredients You Should Eliminate From Your Skincare Routine

Were you aware that the products that are supposed to take care of our skin are often loaded with toxic and potential harmful ingredients?

Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and almost 60% of what we put on it gets absorbed. That means the skincare products that we so religiously use can have a considerable effect on our health and well-being. Unfortunately, the cosmetic and skincare industry in the US is a little less regulated that we may want to believe, which is why numerous unsafe products are easily able to sneak into our beauty cabinets. So, it is up to us to choose safer products and one of the best ways to do so is to read their ingredients list on the label. And products with the following ingredients, among others, should be avoided:

  • Artificial fragrance

A majority of skincare products (yes, even the ones labeled “unscented”) contain some type of artificial fragrance. While fragrance isn’t necessarily bad, a lot of manufacturers do not reveal what their fragrance contains. For all you know, it could be a cocktail of irritants, allergens and even carcinogens.

  • Parabens

Parabens, a group of chemicals, are not always listed on the label, but they are used as preservatives, which means they preserve the shelf life of the skincare products. They are known as endocrine disruptors, which means that they can mimic estrogen in the body and cause hormonal imbalance. They have also been linked to reproductive and fertility issues.

  • Phthalates

Phthalates are also a group of chemicals that are used to increase the flexibility of plastics, and they often find their way into skincare products as well. They are used to retain the fragrance in the products and have been linked to numerous health problems such as breast cancer and reproductive issues.

  • Triclosan

Triclosan is used in skincare products to infuse them with antibacterial properties. However, it is known to cause skin irritation as well as hormonal imbalance. It can also disturb your thyroid. Although it has been banned in the US, some manufacturers continue to use it.

  • Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that if often used as a preservative in skincare products. It has been linked to the development of various health issues such as asthma and neurotoxicity. It can also cause hair loss and skin irritation.

We can understand that it can be seemingly overwhelming to navigate your way through thousands of skincare products trying to find the ones free of ingredients that can potentially harm your skin.
